Fundamental Tilt Principle
The rocker principle is one of the essential foundations of the mechanical operation of the oboe, as well as of all instruments in the woodwind family and the saxophone.
This system is based on a pivot (rod) around which the metal components of the key mechanism are mounted.
Any movement applied to one side of this axis induces a reverse movement on the opposite side.
This mechanical principle governs most of the manipulations required to adjust the instrument. A full-scale model allows students to grasp this principle through hands-on manipulation without any risk of mishandling, as the actual mechanism of the oboe is highly miniaturized and complex for the uninitiated. Furthermore, the application of this physical law is made even more complex by the combined action of the springs and the interconnections between keys (slave links).
Virtually all of the oboe’s keys are subject to spring tension (needle springs or flat springs). These springs exert a continuous force that counteracts gravity, either to keep a key in the closed position or to force it to remain open until a finger’s action changes its state.
The interaction between the keys and the various connection or linkage points forms the basis of wind instrument engineering. The goal of this technical platform is to explain these operating principles in layman’s terms.

Principio fondamentale dell’oscillazione
