“Hot” Tuning Method.
In contrast to the “cold” tuning method, the “hot” tuning protocol is performed without using cigarette paper.
This approach requires technical mastery of the instrument, as it relies on your playing habits and the usual pressure applied by your fingers. This method can be performed entirely on your own and is suited for the left hand, as the right hand is needed to press down on the fingers of the left hand and the keys of the upper body. To adjust the lower body, you’ll need a colleague to press down on the keys, finger plates, or the fingers of your right hand while you’re busy playing.
This method relies on sensory and auditory perception. A significant portion of common mechanical issues stems from the left hand and slight leaks. Using both hands together allows you to test the seal quality of each tone hole on the upper body while playing. Immediate analysis of variations in timbre or sound density serves as the primary indicator of a poor seal.
This protocol allows the adjustment to be calibrated according to each player’s individual playing pressure. An optimal adjustment allows for normal and comfortable pressure on the keys in accordance with our sensory habits, ensuring perfectly legato playing.
This entire adjustment protocol is covered in detail during the workshops offered by Hautbois Futé.
