One-to-one Training

The Format

  • 4 modules
  • Duration : each module lasts 1h30
  • Price: 125.-chf/module

Module I

Assessment and Applying the Model to the Instrument

Objectives :

Develop an understanding of the oboe’s basic mechanics, learn how to transfer theoretical knowledge to your own instrument, and understand the physics of pad pressure.

Theoretical and Practical Content:

• Initial Assessment: Assess the student’s existing knowledge of basic mechanics and adapt the learning objectives accordingly.

•Explaining the Mechanics: The student describes how the oboe works on a specially designed model for the traiing, using simple language to explain the rocker mechanism and the direction in which the adjustment screws turn.

• Applying the Principles to the Oboe: Working in pairs, identify and explore these same mechanical principles directly on the oboe, focusing on the A-key mechanism and its contact point.

Module II

Linked Key Mechanisms and the Principle of Adjustment Priorities

Objectives :

Develop an understanding of multiple keywork linkages, as well as the two adjustment methods used by Hautbois Futé: “cold” and “hot” adjustment. Learn to apply the principle of adjustment hierarchy.

Theoretical and Practical Content:

• Exploring Multiple Keywork Linkages: Study mechanisms in which several keys move together, using a second model.

• Identifying Complex Linkages: Locate and identify these interconnected mechanisms directly on the oboe.

• Learning and Applying the Golden Rule: The primary key (the one directly under the finger) always takes priority over the secondary keys it operates, which are ranked according to their distance from the primary key.

Module III

Practical Adjustment Techniques and Diagnostic Workshop

Objectives :

Develop your technical ear and analytical skills to pinpoint the source of a mechanical fault through playing.

Theoretical and Practical Content:

• Cold and Hot Adjustment Techniques: Practise “cold” adjustment using cigarette paper, followed by “hot” testing while playing. Assess the sensitivity of the pad seal through touch.

•Practical Fault-Finding Exercises: Investigate faults deliberately introduced by the instructor. The student works through the instrument note by note to locate the air leak or mechanical problem (left-hand balance, an F key failing to make contact with the wood, insufficient clearance between the joints, and so on).

Module IV

Safe Disassembly and Emergency Instrument Repairs

Objectives :

Practise safe disassembly under supervision, carry out advanced maintenance procedures, and ensure that your instrument is in perfect working order.

Theoretical and Practical Content :

• Guided Disassembly: Carry out a partial disassembly to resolve a specific mechanical fault, such as a detached bumper cork, a dirty octave vent or a spring that has slipped out of its seating.

• Safe Instrument Repair Techniques: Learn essential workshop safety procedures, including the correct order for laying out and storing components, protecting the pads, and correctly engaging the threads when reinserting key rods.

• Octave Vent Cleaning and Lubrication: Thoroughly clean the octave keys and vents to eliminate water noises, and lubricate the key rods and pivots.

• Final Instrument Check: Carry out a final technical inspection to verify that the instrument is working correctly.
